Using Side Anchors for the Center Seat

What if my car doesn't have lower anchors in the middle position? Can I use the two inner anchors, one from each side, instead?

Both the vehicle manufacturer AND the child restraint manufacturer must explicitly permit use of the lower anchors in this way. This is because these lower anchors are spaced in a non-standard way (i.e. not 11 inches apart).

Child restraints which permit use with non-standard spaced lower anchors:
  • Britax: spacing can be from 11 to 20 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturers permits this.
  • Chicco: spacing must be 11 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.
  • Cosco/Dorel: any spacing, as long as vehicle manufacturer clearly permits this.
  • Fisher Price: spacing 11 to 20 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.
  • Orbit Baby: spacing can be from 11 to 20 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.
  • Recaro: any spacing, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.
  • Safeguard: spacing can be from 11 to 20 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.
  • Snug Seat Hippo: spacing can be from 11 to 20 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.
  • Triple Play (Sit 'N' Stroll): spacing can be over 11 inches, as long as vehicle manufacturer permits this.

Unfortunately, most vehicle manufacturers DO NOT permit installing ANY car seat in the center of their vehicle using any of the lower LATCH anchors. THIS MEANS THAT IF YOUR VEHICLE IS MADE BY ONE OF THE MANUFACTURERS LISTED BELOW, YOU CANNOT INSTALL YOUR CAR SEAT USING THE LOWER LATCH ANCHORS IN THE CENTER POSITION. This applies even if your car seat is one of those listed above that allows for use of the lower anchors at a non-standard spacing.
